Experience
02/2023 - 07/2023
Intelligence Analyst Intern
Groningen, Netherlands
Worked on an anonymization script to filter out medical and personal data in transcribed customer calls. The script included different filtering settings and made use of Named Entity Recognition, Regular Expression, and a Keyword Processor. The calls were in Dutch.

In the second part of my internship, I was responsible for extracting potentially useful information from the anonymized conversations. Since we were not able to use a GPU or build our own dataset, I experimented with Text Summarization and Sentiment Analysis using pre-trained models on Huggingface. I also implemented Topic Modeling (Gensim LDA, Azure LDA, Top2Vec, BERTopic) and Keyword Extraction (TextRank, PositionRank, TopicRank, Yake, KeyBERT) methods.
10/2020 - 08/2021
Research Assistant
Istanbul, Turkey
The project I worked on was studying a newly emerging village sign language in a Turkish small town to gain insight about language emergence and evolution. Sign languages are extremely valuable in this regard as hearing people are exposed to spoken language from childhood and do not often have to invent a new language with no prior language exposure. As such, the project was highly regarded with funding from TUBITAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) and included collaborators from universities such as MIT, Stanford, and Edinburgh.

I attended weekly lab meetings in which we discussed the methodology and results of the study and various papers in the field with a group of Neuroscientists, Linguists, Psychologists, Computer Scientists, and Philosophers.

I was trained on running a psychological experiment and took part in annotating gesture data for statistical analysis and computational modeling along with the other research assistants.

As part of my undergraduate degree and for extra income as a student, I worked in many English teaching jobs in Turkey and in the Netherlands.

I worked with various age groups ranging from 10 to 35 who have had different fluency levels in English and different levels of prior exposure. This taught me skills in adjusting the information level in my presentation according to the audience and let me become comfortable with presenting, public speaking, and communication. I have also learned how to be engaging in my way of presenting.

BUDS is the cool fun name of my alma mater's Debate Society. While I also enjoyed the debate sessions, my main activity in this student association has been my roles in its MUN subcommittee.

I worked as the IT Director of the subcommittee, responsible for maintaining the main MUN website. Additionally, we decided to start a student bulletin focusing on different issues occurring in the world and in Turkey. For this project, I built the PRESENT website, and took part in it as an author and an editor. You can reach some of my work here. The website has since been renovated.

I also worked in the IT Team of the online 2021 MUN conference during the pandemic.
